History has a way of making scientific discovery look simple.
A question is asked. An experiment is conducted. A breakthrough occurs. The scientist responsible is recognized, and the world moves forward.
But the truth is rarely so orderly.
Scientific progress is shaped by persistence, intuition, access, and power. It is also influenced by which questions are considered worthy of investigation—and which people are considered worthy of being heard.
For women, discovery has often come with an additional challenge: ensuring their contributions survived history.
Alice Ball: The Treatment That Nearly Lost Her Name
In the early twentieth century, chaulmoogra oil was being used to treat Hansen’s disease, then commonly called leprosy. Although it showed promise, the oil was difficult to administer effectively.
Chemist Alice Ball developed a solution.
At only 23, Ball found a way to transform the oil into an injectable treatment that could be absorbed by the body. Her discovery became known as the Ball Method and was used for years.
But Ball died before she could publish her findings. Another scientist continued the work and initially received the credit.
The treatment survived. The woman responsible nearly disappeared from its history.
Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler: Claiming Her Place in Medicine
In 1864, Rebecca Lee Crumpler became the first Black woman in the United States to earn a medical degree.
She entered medicine when women were widely considered intellectually and physically unsuited for the profession—and when Black Americans faced enormous barriers to education and medical care.
After the Civil War, Dr. Crumpler treated formerly enslaved people in Richmond, Virginia. She later returned to Boston, where she cared primarily for women and children, often regardless of their ability to pay.
She did not simply claim a place within medicine. She used that place to serve people the medical establishment frequently overlooked.
Tu Youyou: When Ancient Knowledge Meets Modern Science
More than a century later, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou searched for a new treatment for malaria.
Her team examined traditional Chinese medical preparations and became interested in sweet wormwood. When early experiments produced inconsistent results, Tu returned to an ancient text and noticed that the plant was soaked rather than boiled.
She realized heat might be destroying its active compound.
That observation helped lead to the discovery of artemisinin, one of the world’s most important malaria treatments. In 2015, Tu received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Her achievement was not a victory of traditional knowledge over modern science—or science over tradition. It required both.
An ancient text preserved an observation. Scientific testing provided a way to investigate it.
Who Decides What Counts as Knowledge?
The stories of Alice Ball, Rebecca Lee Crumpler, and Tu Youyou are very different. Yet each woman encountered a system that had already formed opinions about whose knowledge mattered.
Their lives remind us that knowledge does not always arrive through the doors we expect.
This does not mean every inherited remedy is effective or every unconventional idea is correct. Observation, testing, and evidence remain essential.
But discernment and dismissal are not the same thing.
When we reject an idea solely because of who presents it, where it originated, or whether it fits comfortably within what we already believe, we may lose the opportunity to ask a better question.
This is one reason I am drawn to writing about medicine, history, and women finding their place within systems that were not built for them.
Fiction allows us to explore what official accounts often leave out: ambition, prejudice, intuition, ego, and the quiet persistence of someone who knows she has seen something others refuse to recognize.
The next discovery may already exist.
The greater question is whether we are willing to listen to the woman carrying it.
